Pilates is an exercise that increases flexibility, strength, and endurance. It works the deep muscles of the spine and back which helps support the spine.
The Pilates Method is comprised of six principles:
Centering. All of the work starts from and is sustained through the center. Joseph Pilates called this the “Powerhouse.” We work around the centerline. Two straight lines run through and are perpendicular to the centerline, one from shoulder to shoulder, one from hip to hip. This is called the frame and it centers the body in all actions.
Concentration. Exercises are executed with focused concentration. The mind guides the body, exercises are not done haphazardly nor on autopilot.
Control. When the work is done from the center with full concentration, you are in full control of the movements. Pilates called his method “Art of Contrology.”
Precision. Exercises are designed with a precise goal in mind to reach the full benefit of the exercise. All exercises have a clear structure, a precise form, work is done with quality not quantity.
Breath. Exercises are done with the rhythm of the breath. Exhale on point of effort to send fresh oxygen to the muscles when they most need it, exhaling all stale air from the lungs.
Flow. The full workout is a flowing succession of exercises performed with vigorous dynamics. There is a minimum of movement between one exercise and the next.
Joseph Pilates referred to his equipment and designs as “apparatus.” His original designs included the reformer, Cadillac, Wunder Chair, and Ladder Barrel.
Reformer. A flat carriage which uses a series of springs and pulleys to provide variable resistance in a number of different positions.
Cadillac. Looks like a canopy bed with a four-post metal frame and cushioned mat. At one end is the push through bar which can be loaded with springs; arm and leg springs as well as a roll down car which can be hooked at the other end. A slider bar at the top of the canopy houses the trapeze bar which supports stretching.
Wunder Chair. Features a cushioned seat, a small base with little support and a pedal which can be spring loaded.
Ladder Barrel. Designed to provide support for the spine against gravity, the Barrels are great tool for promoting breath capacity, flexibility and better posture.
